What is Fat Freezing?
One of the most common questions I get asked at my clinic is: What exactly is Fat Freezing? While many refer to it as Fat Freeze, the technical term is Cryolipolysis. This non-invasive treatment involves freezing fat cells to break them down and eliminate them naturally. It’s an effective way to target stubborn fat pockets without the need for intense exercise or surgery.
How Does Fat Freeze Work?
During the procedure, a suction applicator is placed on the targeted area, drawing in the fat tissue. The area is then cooled to approximately -7 to -8°C, triggering apoptosis (fat cell death). Over the next 2 to 4 months, your body naturally processes and removes the dead fat cells, leading to a visible reduction in fat thickness.
This treatment is backed by clinical research, including a 2009 study published in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, which reported the following findings:
- 20% fat reduction within 2 months.
- 25.5% reduction at 6 months post-treatment.
- Temporary numbness was experienced by some patients but fully resolved within 3 weeks.
- No permanent nerve damage or skin complications were recorded.
Their conclusion?
“Non-invasive Cryolipolysis (Fat Freezing) results in substantial fat reduction within 2 months of treatment without damaging the skin.”
What Areas Can Be Treated?
The most popular area for Fat Freezing is the stomach, but other treatable areas include:
- Thighs (inner & outer)
- Love handles (flanks)
- Under shoulder blades
- Knees (if enough fat is present)
- Chin (for double chin reduction)
As a general rule—if you can pinch and grab the fat, it can likely be treated!
Why We Use 3D Lipo for Fat Freezing
At our Wigan medispa, we use the 3D Lipo machine because it provides multiple treatment options tailored to different fat types. Not all fat pockets are the same, and having the flexibility to use different-sized applicators ensures better results.
For example:
- If the fat is too firm to be suctioned effectively, Cavitation might be a better option.
- If there’s loose skin after weight loss or pregnancy, combining Radiofrequency & Cavitation can help tighten the area.
Does the Fat Come Back?
No—as long as you maintain your weight! Fat Freezing permanently destroys fat cells in the treated area. However, the remaining fat cells can still expand if you gain weight. Additionally, new fat cells can form over time, which is why a healthy lifestyle is essential for maintaining long-term results.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Fat Freezing is a low-risk treatment, but some temporary side effects may include:
- Redness immediately after treatment
- Numbness for a few days (similar to a ‘dead arm’ feeling)
- Bruising or mild swelling (rare and resolves within days)
- Temporary pigmentation changes (in very rare cases, lasting a few months)
We apply a special protective gel pad to prevent skin damage, ensuring the process is both safe and comfortable.
My Expert Opinion
3D Lipo Fat Freeze is an excellent treatment, achieving 20-40% fat reduction in a treated area. However, realistic expectations are key—it won’t remove every fat cell like liposuction, but it’s a non-invasive, surgery-free alternative that delivers noticeable results.
If the fat pocket is larger, you may need a second session in the same area 2-3 months later.
Also, keep in mind:
- This is not a weight-loss treatment but rather a way to target stubborn fat pockets.
- If you’re on a weight-loss journey, it’s best to lose weight first, then use Fat Freezing to refine your shape.
