What is a Polynucleotide treatment?

by | Oct 26, 2024 | Ageing, Skin

Polynucleotide treatments are the latest anti-ageing must-haves in the skin and aesthetic industry. But what exactly is a polynucleotide treatment?

At my Medispa near Wigan, in the north west of England, we offer this new innovation and are loving the results. Here I’m going to explain in simple terms what they are and what they’re good for.

What is a polynucleotide?

Think of a toy train which has lots of carriages connected together. A Polynucleotide is a chain of nucleotides which is held together with bonds.  A single polynucleotide has 14 of these in a chain. Our human DNA is an example of a polynucleotide.

For aesthetic treatments – manufacturers use Salmon cells (yes the fish) to formulate the polynucleotides which we inject into the skin. The DNA is taken from the sperm of Salmon and is purified.

This mimics the DNA found in humans. And what’s so good is that they stimulate our own cells to produce something that we’re losing because of ageing.

These polynucleotides have a bio-stimulating effect which means they make your skin produce more collagen and elastin. This is like turning back time, and makes your skin firmer and younger. On top of this they also increase hydration and are anti-oxidant.

What happens in a Polynucleotide treatment?

We use a series of small injections to administer them into the skin in specific areas.

The injections are really superficial, very much like a skin booster.

You’ll have one treatment to start with, eg. around your eyes. Ideally for best results you should have 2-3 treatments spaced 2-4 weeks apart.

They can be used to improve the skin in many ways;

  • improving skin firmness
  • reducing fine lines and wrinkles
  • improving overall texture and brightness
  • reducing scarring

The results can last up to one year after a course of three treatments.

Why choose a Polynucleotide over a Skin Booster?

You may have heard of skin boosters, such as Profilho. Skin boosters normally contain hyaluronic and are injected into the skin to improve hydration, texture and brightness.

Well Polynucleotide treatments are a step ahead of skin boosters. They use totally naturally occurring ingredients, instead of synthetic ingredients, and they communicate with your own cells to make improvements.

Skin boosters are also limited to specific areas. For example Profilho cannot be used under the eye area, and is primarily for the lower face and neck. However polynucleotides can be used on almost any area.  The under eye area is the best example of this.

I hope this has helped you understand more about polynucleotide treatments.
