How does Botox work for wrinkles?
We’ve all heard of the anti-wrinkle toxin Botox, but how does Botox work for wrinkles? If you’re thinking of go ahead and opting for Botox one of the other brands of toxin then it’s good to understand exactly how it works to reduce your frown lines and wrinkles!
How does Botox reduce wrinkles?
Firstly Botox doesn’t actually restore your skin in any way. The way it works is to stop the frown and crease from occurring.
Botox is a toxin which is injected into the muscles – in areas where you frown or your face creases.
In simple terms Botox stops the message from your nerves so they don’t tell your muscles to ‘fire’. This makes the muscle stop working, or it makes the muscle contract less aggressively in specific areas of your face, when injected correctly.
So the typical lines you’ll see as you age, are;
- forehead lines (when you raise your eyebrows)
- frown lines (between your eyebrows known as the glabella when you frown)
- crows feet (when you smile)
Once your muscles stop contracting in those areas – forehead, glabellar and crows feet, the muscles are more relaxed and your lines are almost instantly softer. This reduction in muscle contractions also allows your skin to repair and heal. This means your skin is less creased and looks younger!
So the Botox allows the skin to rest, and also to heal.
How long does Botox take to work?
You will start to notice the difference from 2-3 days. But the full effect may take up to 10 days in total.
If you undergo Botox or other wrinkle injections, you will be offered a top up appointment around 2 weeks later. This is so that your practitioner can see the full effect of the treatment, and administer any top ups or make adjustments.
As I’ve already mentioned there are more brands of toxins other than just Botox. For example;
Azzalure – clients who’ve had Azzalure tend to notice that the effect takes longer to kick in. Because of its smaller molecular size, results start to become noticeable after around 1 week onwards ( 2-3 days with Botox)
Bocoture – is another brand of toxin, which takes around 2-3 days to kick in, similar to Botox.
