Botox or Filler for Jowls
So you’re thinking of having a treatment and not sure what to go for? This common question is probably what you’re asking – what’s best.. Botox or Filler for jowls?
In my clinic near Wigan I get asked this question frequently, and so I’ve written this simple guide to help you.
Botox or Filler for Jowls
The fact is that both of these injectable treatments can help improve a sagging jawline. They work in different ways, but this is what you need to know;
How Botox works for Jowls
You’re probably well aware of the use of Botox for the upper face to reduce frown lines and crows feet. It works by preventing muscles from contracting.
Well it can also be injected into the lower face, to have a lifting and tightening effect. It is injected into muscles in the lower face which pull down. By preventing the ‘pulling down’ effect of these muscles, the result is that the jowls are subtly lifted.
Botox is. therefore a good option for anyone who has just started with the appearance of jowls, or to prevent them from getting worse. Botox will take up to 2 weeks to take effect fully and lasts up to about 4 months.
However if your jowls are more defined and set in, with deeper lines and sagging skin then you may want to consider fillers instead or even a combination of the two.
How Filler works for Jowls
Dermal fillers help in more ways than one.
Jowls come because of sagging skin from the loss of collagen and elasticity. But also because the face has lost fatty tissue, and so there’s less support and volume for the skin to be held tightly.
Think of sucking air out of a balloon – the balloon will look more crinkly as it loses volume. This happens to our faces as we age.
Dermal fillers are therefore a brilliant solution because when injected in the right place they can add the volume we’ve lost, particularly in our cheeks. Cheek fillers are very popular to restore the fat which is lost there – which has the effect of lifting the face.
Jawline filler and Chin filler can also help to define the contour of the face, and this will reduce jowls too, by giving the skin more support in these areas.
For more severe jowls a combination approach is often best. So we can inject fillers to restore volume and structure, but also we can improve the texture of the skin and boost collagen and elastin. There are many other effective treatments that can be combined with dermal fillers such as;
- HIFU to target the SMAS layer and lift the jowls
- Radofrequency Microneedling (Morpheus 8) to tighten the skin and reduce lines and wrinkles
- Skin boosters or Polynucleotides to improve texture
- Botox to also lift the jowl area
Conclusion
I hope this has helped you understand the difference between botox and filler and how they work. The important thing is that you have a consultation with a respected aesthetic provider. Ideally they should be experienced in Botox, Filler and multiple other treatments. This way they can help tailor the best treatments for you.
